Summary: The surgical technician participates in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room under the direction of the registered nurse. The surgical technician will perform a variety of duties to prepare and maintain the OR Suite for the patient. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout his surgical experience. Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff. Maintain excellent physical and mental health. Assure that the proper supplies/implants, instruments and equipment is available for the procedure. Assure that equipment is functioning properly. Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during procedure. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies used. Sign all appropriate documentation. Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with orthopedic and ASC issues. Display professionalism at work and in the community; abide by Bone and Joint Standards of Behavior and STUDER principles. Take an active role on committees within the organization. Identify actual and potential risks to patients and others. Prepare for next day's cases by gathering supplies, instruments and equipment. Perform required autoclave tests and check for proper temperature and pressure. Keep daily logs of autoclave performance. Disinfect and sterilize instruments as required. Assure that proper room turn-over is being completed. Prepare OR with supplies and equipment required for the procedure. Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room. Assist with positioning of the patient for procedure using proper positioning techniques. Assist with surgical prep and draping the patient per protocol Monitor for breaks in sterile technique. Suture subcutaneous/subcuticular skin (Must have attended or complete an approved wound closure class) Perform sponge and needle counts as appropriate. Remain prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call system and location of emergency supplies and equipment. Assist entire team throughout procedure to ensure a desired outcome. Ensure that Universal Precautions are maintained. Assist in cleaning of room and instruments. Maintain a clean instrument workroom and sterile supply room. Order supplies for BJOSC as needed. Update physician preference cards Inspect instruments for proper working order and notify Nurse Manager of any required repairs or replacements. Check for outdated supplies. Assist in restocking OR and wrapping and sterilizing of instruments. Assist with planning for annual budget. Perform other duties as assigned. Run the C-Arm (Must have had appropriate training) Education/Experience: Must be a high school graduate (or equivalent) and have completed a recognized operating room technician training program. One year of operating room scrub experience is preferred. Must be CPR certified. Preferred accomplishments include experience in Orthopedic and outpatient surgery. Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively, possess the ability to work compatibly with physicians and staff and have strong organizational skills with a clear understanding of the importance of cost effectiveness. Qualifications : Candidates must have the knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties of an operating room technician. Which include proper aseptic technique, awareness of breaks in asepsis and required corrective action. Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, an aptitude for operating/troubleshooting equipment, and understands proper use of high-speed autoclaves and sterilization techniques. Valid WI Driver's license and occasional travel is required to other Bone & Joint facilities. Must be flexible in job duties and work schedule.
